International Post Adoption Reports

Many countries require adoptive parents to report on the child's progress and welfare after an adoption has concluded, sometimes for several years after the adoption has taken place. These reports require a social worker to visit your home to complete a post-adoption report (PAR).

If you live outside of Colorado, your home study agency will be working with you on your post-adoption reports. Otherwise, IAN will support and assist you in this phase.

The report contains information on your child's development and adjustment since arriving home with his/her new family. These reports are vital because they provide assurances to political leaders and adoption officials in the child's country of origin that intercountry adoption was indeed in the child's best interest.

*Post Adoption Reports are crucial! The U.S. Dept of State, "strongly urges all adoptive parents to take these obligations seriously and comply with post-adoption and post-placement requirements in a timely manner. Failure to do so may put at risk the ability of future U.S. families and foreign childnren to be matched. Your cooperation will contribute to the country of origin's history of positive experiences with U.S. citizen adoptive parents."

Required Re-Validation in the US

All families adopting internationally are required to re-validate their foreign adoption in the United States. This court process is completed in the county court where the family resides. International Adoption Net will assist Colorado families in filing. If a family lives out of the state of Colorado, the family's home study agency may be able to assist, or the family can hire an attorney.

IAN does require your child's copies listed below once the adoption is complete:

  • Certificate of Citizenship
  • US Court Decree Certified Validating Foreign Adoption
  • US Birth Certificate
  • Hague Certificate

Domestic Adoption Post Placement

Post placement supervision is required by the State of Colorado for a minimum period of six months after placement. This supervision requires a home visit with a social worker within the first two weeks of arriving home.

Then post-adoption home visits and reports are required every other month with a Social worker until the adoption is finalized. This process is to provide support for you and to ensure the physical and emotional well-being of your child. We will assist you with techniques to use toward successful attachment and adjustment between your family and your child.
