Travel in Ethiopia

The Ethiopian Government requires Adoptive Parents to make two trips to Ethiopia for their adoption.  Exceptions can be made if both parents are unable to travel for both trips.

Court Trip: Getting to Know Ethiopia

At IAN, we believe when adopting from any country, you are adopting a child as well the country.  It is important to learn about the culture and life in that country.  This first trip is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Ethiopia.

Itinerary for the Court Trip

Adoptive Parents will travel to Addis Ababa and will stay for a minimum of 3 days.  Adoptive Parents will meet their child(ren) and attend court to give their consent for the adoption.  Your first days in Addis Ababa will look something like this (always subject to change)

Day 1: Arrive in Addis Ababa.  The Guest House will meet you at the airport and take you to the guest house. Most families will take the day/night to relax and rest after the long trip.

Day 2: Our IAN in country staff will meet with you, then will take you to meet your child(ren).

Day 3: You will visit your child(ren) and go out for an excursion to get to know Ethiopia.

Day 4: You will go to court.  After court, you will meet with the birth family (if possible) and visit their child(ren).

Day 5: Adoptive Parents will visit their child(ren) and explore more of Ethiopia before departing for the U.S.

Embassy Trip: Getting to Know Your Child

On your second trip, it is finally time to pick up your child(ren).  The child(ren) will stay with you the entire week, which will give you plenty of time to get to know each other.  The average stay in Addis Ababa is five to seven days.  Your days will look something like this: (always subject to change).

Day 1: Arrive in Addis Ababa.  The Guest House will meet you at the airport and take you to the guest house.  Most families take the day/night to relax and rest after the long trip.

Day 2: Our IAN representative will take you to pick up your child. Please take this opportunity to visit with the staff and caregivers and ask any questions you have about your child(ren).

Day 3: On this day you will have an Embassy interview so you can apply to get a VISA for your child. We try our best to schedule all families on the same day.

Day 4: Free day to travel or whatever your heart desires.

Day 5: Another free day for you, however, an IAN representative will be picking up your child's VISA.

Day 6: Time to go home with one or two in tow!
