1. Can I adopt more than one child at a time?
Parents can adopt only related children/siblings. Unrelated children cannot be adopted together. Parents can complete one adoption from India, and after one positive 3-month post placement visit, they can petition for a second adoption.
2. Do I need a visa to travel to India?
Yes. This must be done before you depart for your trip, as visas are not available upon arrival.
3. What languages do the children speak?
Hindi is the official language of India, but many Indians do speak English.
4. What information will I receive when I receive my referral?
When you first receive your referral, you will receive the Child Study Report, Mecical Examination Report and a letter of introduction about the child. Once the referral has been accepted, there will be additional informaiton sent periodically, including developmental updates, medical reports and photos.
5. Can I use any US based adoption agency.
No. First, the agency you choose needs to be Hague-accredited. Second, the Agency must have licensing with CARA.
6. Do Indian Citizens living in the US or Individuals of Indian decent recive priority?
While all adoptive parents must follow the same procedures outlined here by the Hague-agreement, India does perfer to place Indian children with families of Indian descent. Please contact IAN for more information.
