Location

India is in southern Asia, bordering the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, between Burma and Pakistan.

Size

As the seventh largest country in the world, India covers a little over 3.2 million km or a little over 2 million miles. In US standards, that would be slightly more than one-third the size of the US.

Capitol

The capitol of India is New Delhi, located in the north of India. New Dehli is one of the fastest growing cities in the world and has a total population of nearing 300,000 residents. The climate of New Delhi is a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical with high variation between summer and winter temperatures. The temperatures can vary between 104°F in the summer months to around 45°F in the winter months.

Flag

The flag of India has three equal horizontal bands of saffron (subdued orange) (top), white and green, with a blue chakra (24-spoked wheel) centered in the white band. The saffron represents courage, sacrifice and the spirit of renunciation; white signifies purity and truth; green stands for faith and fertility. The blue chakra symbolizes the wheel of life in movement and death in stagnation.

Population

The population of India is approximately 1.1 billion people, making it the largest population in the world. The most widely spoken language is Hindi however India has a total of 14 other official languages. English is considered a subsidiary official language. The primary religion in India is Hindu, followed by Muslim.

Geography

Due to the size of India, its topography varies widely. In the south it is upland plain (Deccan Plateau), flat to rolling plains along the Ganges, deserts in the west and the Himalayas in the north

Climate

Due to the varied topography, India experiences a variety of climates from tropical monsoon in the south to temperate in the north.
